| | The year was 2008 |
At the end of the 2007/2008 season, Comets, Flames and Meteors (made up from 2 teams). Meteors did not qualify for the quarter finals but played resiliently for the whole day. They faced some tough opposition in their group and did themselves proud. Comets had a blinding day and were undefeated until the final where they lost to Vixens - a very strong athletic team. They played some fantastic netball and were a credit to the club as were flames who also made it to the final but were beaten by Turnford the under 14 champions. Amanda Newton the recently retired England Captain presented the girls with their trophies and very kindly was happy to have her photo taken with them. We only have photos of the Comets so we hope someone out there can send in some shots of the other teams (please) The Bedford League in 2008 was an excellent experience for most of our teams, a gruelling trial for some. The club, as a whole, has pushed-through some of the problems one way or another but we think we've come out the other side much stronger. We have learned some important lessons from the Bedford League and will be reviewing some of our policies for the 2008/09 season as a result. | |
We have some photos taken at the Spotlight event where, guess what? Comets beat Maulden Falcons. Meteors and Comets stood still long enough for some pictures to be taken: thanks to Debbie Conquest. Turnford Tournament was held on Saturday 10th May. The combined Thunder and Storm squad played excellently against teams that we know are really tough to beat. Thanks to Lisa Wells-Day for sending in the results: | | Westoning 4 Hertford Hornets (B) 3 Westoning 2 Oaksway 2 Westoning 11 High Wycombe (A) 2 Westoning 5 Hatfield 3 Westoning 2 Turnford (B) 6 Westoning 10 Dacorum 4 Westoning 1 Poole 11
I think the results speak for themselves the girls played really well considering the heat and the result for the last match against Poole doesn’t really reflect how well they played and with a few injuries involving fingers and an ankle along the way for four of the girls. Lisa. Click here to see the team photo: It's a little blurred, sorry! We'll try and get a better one. |
The Cranfield tournament was held on Saturday 3rd May. Comets won the U13 age group & played really well. Meteors also did extremely well with a bit of a mix & match team, with 2 guest players, and several injuries! It was a struggle to get a team of 7 out, & they did very well under the circumstances! Thunder & Storm also played very well. Overall, a fine effort put in today.
| Comets results: v Grangers Thunder - we won 6 - 0 v Hawks - we won 14 - 1 v Norfolk Utd - we won 13 - 5 v Dame Alice Diamonds - we won 11 - 1 v MK Netters Blizzard - we won 5 - 3 v Cranfield Panthers - we won 5 - 4 (they gave us a bit of a scare & we had to come back from 3 - 0 down!!) v Westoning Meteors - we won 12 - 3 v Maulden Falcons - we won 12 - 5 v Tameside - we won 5 - 4 (Tameside are a very strong club who were either winners or runners up in every age group at the tournament, so this was an excellent result). |
Year 5 and year 8 squads visited Leighton Buzzard to play in a tournament on Saturday 9th February 2008. A fantastic day’s netball, which started off with the Year 5 & 6 Tournament in the morning. Westoning Sparks got off to a great start with a 3 – 1 win against High Wycombe. The six girls played extremely well throughout the morning, and were worthy representatives of the club. Some tough defending and sharp shooting saw the girls progress to the semi-finals. Here we came up against the much stronger Dallow team, and lost the match. Amy, Anna, Chloe, Ellie, Holly & Sophie should be very proud of their performances, and reaching the semi-finals in your first tournament is a wonderful achievement. Very well done girls. At 1pm the Year 7 & 8 tournament kicked off. Westoning Comets were on a mission from the off, seeing off Leighton Buzzard Eagles 15-1. Their toughest group match followed. Comets were unsettled, and not at their best, but managed a 6 – 2 win over High Wycombe Blue. Then followed two much better performances, which saw the girls playing more controlled, and flowing netball, to win 18 – 0 against Dallow Saracens, and 13 – 1 against Maulden Kestrels. And so on to the semi – finals where we met Blizzard MK Netters. A fine performance from all 9 girls saw off Blizzard in a convincing 9 – 2 result. High Wycombe White awaited Comets in the final, but they were no match for the Westoning girls, as we beat them 10 – 4. Westoning Comets were the champions of the U13 age group. An achievement to be proud of from Alice, Ella, Hannah, Helen, Morgan, Paige, Ruth, Sara and Sophie. Well done Comets!! |

Sunday January 20th 2008 Year 7 and 8 teams returned from Stockland Green, Birmingham, after the last of three visits playing in a 7 a-side tournament.
The year 8 team made short work of most of their opponents, ending-up in a highly creditable runner-up position for the entire 3 stage tournament. Fantastic! Here's some photos of the Year 8 victors. |
