Match Reports 2nd November 2008 - Birmingham

Once again a team of year 8 girls (Abi, Monica, Jennifer, Heather, Ellen, Kate, Fiona, Ruth and Kayleigh) made the journey to Birmingham on a cold Sunday morning to play netball. Fortunately there were 9 girls this time allowing for a couple of subs.

Westoning v Yendis

The first game was against Yendis and the girls made a promising start with the first quarter ending in a draw 3-3.  It was a very fast game but the girls managed to hold their own and at half time Yendis were only just in the lead by 1 goal as the score was 7-6.

Despite fresh legs in the 3rd quarter, in the form of Ellen, Yendis really settled into the game and began to pull ahead finishing the quarter in the lead by 14 goals to 8.

At the start of the last quarter the girls remained positive and determined however Yendis were marking really tightly and the girls struggled to get the ball up the court to Abi and Kayleigh.  Unfortunately, despite the whole team’s efforts and hard work, they were only able to score one goal compared to Yendis 8 with the final score being Westoning 9 – Yendis 22.

All the girls put in a fantastic effort and should be really proud of them selves.

Westoning v Elmdon

The next match was against Elmdon and the girls didn’t let the previous score dishearten them as they began the game with enthusiasm. The first two quarters saw the teams fairly evenly matched as they took it in turns to take the lead with the half time score being a very close Westoning 6 – Elmdon 7.

With the promise of a Galaxy bar from Laura if they “....pulled it together and won” the girls stepped it up a gear with Kaleigh and Abi scoring a fantastic six goals in the third quarter.

Fiona was on top form and made some brilliant interceptions in defence. They finished the third quarter ahead by 3 goals with the score being 12-9 to Westoning.

The girls continued to work hard and managed to maintain their lead in the last quarter with the final score being Westoning 16 –Elmdon 13.

A great way to finish with smiles all around.

Birmingham 12th October 2008

Westoning JNC U13

Westoning 8 Parkside 28

We knew this was going to be a tough game but the girls played on relentlessly and were fantastic.  With no subs it was a hard match but the first quarter we were only trailing by one goal 4 -3, with some brilliant interceptions from Heather as WD.  The second quarter was very much the same and at one point Westoning were drawing 5 – 5 with all the girls pulling together even though some were playing out of position.  Fiona GK and Monica GD played a very strong defence with Abi GA and Kate GS making sure the goals went in, we ended the 2nd quarter trailing 10 – 6.  With no subs the girls were tiring by the third quarter, with Parkside able to put fresh legs on but Westoning kept their heads up and played a hard fast game but by the end of the 3rd quarter we were behind 16 – 8.  The girls remained positive and went out and played the last quarter, Jenny C, Heather WD and Ellen WA battled as best as they could with the ball flying up and down the court, unfortunately we were unable to convert any goals in the last quarter with Parkside managing to end the match 28 – 8.  This was a very even match though and had we been fortunate enough to have a couple of subs the score would most likely have been much closer, the girls proved themselves in the first two quarters and should be very proud of themselves, their attitude and commitment should be commended!

Westoning 13 Lyndon 2

This match was played as a friendly as there was not a yr 8 Lyndon Team.  It was agreed that as we were there we would play the yr 7 Lyndon team who to be honest could easily have passed for yr 8 as they were so tall!  Monica didn’t have the advantage for a change, the GA was taller than her but she defended well along with Fiona and made sure the goals did not go in.  Although Westoning managed to put more goals in the girls still had to work and Kate really made an impression with her shooting.  Well done to the team they really showed they can pull together!

Birmingham 14th December 2008

Westoning JNC U13

For the final time this year a team of year 8 girls travelled to Birmingham:

Westoning V Foxes

The first match was against Foxes and the girls started in the following positions Ruth GK, Monica GD, Georgia WD, Kirsty C, Jenny WA, Abi GA and Niamh GS. The girls made a promising start with Abi scoring in the first minute, however the first quarter saw the teams evenly matched as each team took it in turns to score a goal ending the quarter 4 all. The second quarter didn’t go so well with Westoning only managing to score one goal to Foxes 4. In the third quarter the girls had a swap around to rest their legs a little as there were no subs. They marked well and managed to hold their own. Once again they took it in turns to score goals, each team scoring 3. For the last quarter the girls returned to their original positions and despite a determined effort Foxes managed to pull ahead ending the match Westoning 10 – Foxes 15.

Westoning V Bromsgrove

The second match was against Bromsgrove and the girls started in the same positions as they had the first match as they seemed to work well together in that formation. Again in the first quarter the teams seemed evenly matched scoring 4 goals each. Unluckily for Niamh the whistle to end the quarter blew just as she was about to shoot. A very fast second quarter saw Bromsgrove pulling ahead by one goal although Westoning were playing better netball! At half time we decided to try Laura’s tactic and the girls were promised a chocolate bar (of their choice) if they managed to win (well the bribe worked last time!).
They played some fantastic netball in the third quarter and their passes flowed swiftly down the court. Abi and Niamh worked really well together in the D and at one point Westoning were winning the quarter 6-3. The match was so close with the score at the end of the third quarter being Westoning 14 – Bromsgrove 13! The final quarter was absolutely brilliant. Excellent defending from Ruth and Monica meant Bromsgrove had little chance to score. Georgia, Kirsty and Jenny played really well together getting the ball quickly and accurately down the court to Abi and Niamh who made the most of every opportunity scoring an amazing 12 goals!!!  There were some spectacular goals scored from the edge of the D with the final score for the match being Westoning 26 Bromsgrove 18. A well deserved win for Westoning!
